i like to partially judge Obama by whether or not i think JFK, LBJ, FDR would have done the same thing.  would FDR have signed the health care bill?  would JFK have intervened in Libya?  would LBJ have taken 3 years to end DADT?  i like to think that this approach helps provide me with some historic context when judging Obama.

I really do worry about the state of reading comprehension. Or maybe it’s just that extremists can’t grasp the notion of non-extreme positions held by other people. - Paul Krugman

    •  FDR did put through Social Security (0+ / 0-)

despite its flaws -- there was no coverage for domestics and farmworkers because the South didn't want "those people" (the blacks) to get government money. And the protections for women (especially stay-at-home mothers) were very flimsy. Over the years the program has been strengthened and improved; I still hope the same will come about with HCR as it currently stands.

And a pre-Bay of Pigs JFK might well have intervened in Libya, if called upon by NATO or other international alliance.

Now to try to end the wars we ask our gay and straight soldiers to fight. -- Chris Hayes
