The big stimulus needed to happen first, and it didn't. There was probably no way to repair the situation after the first six months of 2009.

Ok, so I read the polls.

    •  Yup, no "bigger" stimulus was possible (11+ / 0-)

We got the stimulus that was politically possible, and that was that.

It's a fact of political life, a vagary of democracy, that it doesn't always allow the policies that are needed.  Mistakes are made, and adverse consequences happen.  And sometimes the wrong lessons are learned, or no lessons are learned at all, or no consensus is reached in the court of public opinion on what the lessons are.

      That's life.

Liberals always will say the stimulus wasn't big enough.  Personally, I think a bigger stimulus would've helped only on the margins, we'd still be in tough shape all these past couple years.

Conservatives have their talking points but no policy ideas on what would've worked better, and certainly no ideas that are worth attention.

The economy is a huge freightliner that steers only very slowly.  And sometimes more slowly than others.

All this is to say I really don't think any President or any set of politically possible policies would put us on a much better path than we've traveled so far in this weak recovery.  That's just how life is sometimes, our leaders in reality just don't always have much control over a situation.

None of this is to say we shouldn't be reflective on what could've been done differently.  That's always valuable.  But it's a mistake to simply assume different things necessarily would've produced a much better outcome...that's not always true, and in this case I think it's not true.
