    The red dot on the USAAC star was eliminated sometime in 1942, I thought, since some thought it might be taken for a rising sun. Was the P-51 already under development then?

    Geeky sort of question, I guess... I'm sure the museum has nothing but the best advisors!

      in October of 1940.  The USAAC received two NA-73 from a batch ordered in September of 1940.  Wiki shows an early XP-51 as 41-039, so it would have been delivered early in FY 1941.

      The red dot disappeared from Navy aircraft between Coral Sea (May 1942) Midway (June 1942).  I assume USAAC would have followed a similar pattern.
