and assigned into jobs to get back money they had paid in taxes (unemployment insurance).  Sure, lots of libs go for that.

    You are snarking right>

Obviously the way they rig it is completely horrible, but having an available (not forced) program that out-of-work people could earn some extra cash at while looking for a job or training would be a good thing, esp. after their unemployment runs out.

I personally think one of the reasons we're having such a hard time recovering is the lack of much if any support network or programs for the unemployed.  Basically we give 'em a few weeks of a fraction of their old income then toss them on the street.

If we had something like the WPA again then that could absorb some of that excess capacity, while helping out a lot of people.  Commentator above's point about "prevailing wages" would of course be a prerequisite.

The federal government employs people.  They have since Day One of our founding.

So you are tellling me that if I pay unemployment taxes, in order to tap into my insurance, I should be assigned to a below minimum wage job where my employer gets the money that I paid into the system.  And you seem to be trolling for information here to use, am I understanding you correctly?

        •  Not talking about forcing, also @prevailing wages (0+ / 0-)

Just suggesting the govt become an employer of last resort for those who either have used up their unemployment or need additional money on top of it.  Course it'll never happen in today's political climate.

In reading some of the responses I realized I originally missed some of the details of the suggestion, but what I'm discussing is completely different from that plan, was just brainstorming on something that might actually be useful that was obliquely spawned by the idea above.

the corporate coffers.  That's their whole idea; come up with legislation that brings in profit for the corporate elite.  If it were done your way, people would earn a fair wage while looking for work, contribute some wages to unemployment to help those still on unemployment, fix and repair our infrastructure...and with no profits figured into the plan.  That is not for ALEC or their minions - profits or no go.
