(votes) to do that. Too many of the freshmen are convinced Jesus has told them to hold the line (gag me). If Boehner had the power he should, as Speaker, there'd be less drama and Cantor would be whining in the corner.

Let's say 230+ House Rs, minus about 80 T-Party. Then add Dem votes ... ???

    •  Yup. Boehner's the one in the corner this time. (3+ / 0-)

He has to court Pelosi (which must gall him and any Republican who has even a shred of integrity--ironic as that sounds) to get the votes. The final question is: what kind of bargain can Pelosi drive?

Not all that impossible to think about.

and both will bring him down. If he allows the debt ceiling to hold, he'll be held responsible for bringing the U.S. economy into another recession, and Boehner knows this. He has Newt's history to give him nightmares. If he capitulates and has to cut a deal with Pelosi, he will gain passage of raising the debt ceiling but will weaken as a house leader.

I don't feel sorry for him because he allowed the stupid rhetoric to gain ground in the House that the debt ceiling didn't matter.

Cantor's an idiot. He may gain ground with the Conservative Caucus in the House, may even unseat Boehner, but he's now intensely disliked by President Obama. This makes his leadership role dubious and there will be some Repubs who know this and I suspect, that if Boehner goes down as Speaker, Cantor won't be picked to replace him. Maybe someone like Pence. Cantor has overplayed his hand.
