  •  The district is pretty culturally conservative... (6+ / 0-)

    But Barcia:

1). Is far more conservative than the median Democratic base voter is in the district. He was the only Michigan Democrat at the time to vote to authorize the Iraq War, for example.

2). Is from Bay City, not Flint, and the local Democrats will want a Dem from Flint/Genesee County, not Saginaw or Bay City, and:

3). Always ran in a district that connected the Thumb and the conservadem farm counties south of Alpena through Bay County. The current (and future) 5th is almost entirely urban.

4). Was retired-by-term-limits from the State Senate last year, and probably thought that was the last office he would ever run for and has made plans accordingly.

Barcia's best shot might involve Flint splitting their vote in a primary.

But he did set himself up well for the future by stepping aside for Kildee and helping introduce Kildee to his district back in 2002. So that's the sort of class move that could help him get some support for replacing Kildee.

so that seems to be pretty on the ball.

I'm sure this district will get coverage if they do the "Do blue-collar White people still like Obama" stories again...
