That would be fantastic. She's young and seems to have been a great foil to Snyder.

        •  Yep (3+ / 0-)

She's my state senator.  I'm pretty convinced that she was discouraged from running for AG, last year, or she saw what everyone else saw that it was going to be a terrible year for state Dems.  I'm convinced she was going to use the AG spot much like Granholm did to eventually run for governor.

I'm kind of torn, Bernero is my mayor and a helluva good one and I think he'd have been a star Democratic governor, and I also think Whitmer's ambitions won't be stopped and I like her a lot, too.  Bernero was the one that gave her her current seat in the senate, really.

I guess it's good to have such problems, though.  I think either of them is infinitely more exciting than anything on the other side.  Lest we forget, Snyder basically won by default given the year and because of your normal 2-term turnover.  They really didn't have any stars.  In fact, those that were expected to have a shot at winning (Cox, Bouchard, etc...) aren't personally likeable, even by huge swaths of their own party.

I think Bernero was a poor candidate.  I'm sure he would've been a far better governor than Synder but I didn't find him inspiring.  Whitmer would be a stronger state-wide candidate.

Bernero's campaigned shocked me for how poorly and one-dimensional he came across.  I guess I chalk it up to him never having run for state-wide office before, but it was a total shock given his amazing back-story he never really exploited and his force-of-nature personality.  His television commercials were just horrible and amateurish.

BTW, I think Whitmer would make a great governor, too, but she's quite a bit more conservative than some people think, or at least that's the part she likes to play up to appear moderate.  She's also not above a good gimmicky piece of legislation including putting forth a shameless ban of novelty lighters 'cause "wont' someone think of the children?"  I don't think there is anyone in Michigan, right now, as telegenic as she is, and I'm glad to see the direction she's taken as Senate Minority leader, but her past stunts don't wear well on me.

I think Whitmer would be a more progressive governor than Bernero.  Bernero mentioned during the campaign that we can't raise taxes, even going as far as to say he wouldn't support a graduated income tax.  Alma Wheeler Smith, while in the race, criticized Bernero as not being a strong pro-choice candidate.  If I remember correctly, the article I read said he only had about a 50% planned parenthood rating.  I found Bernero gimmicky with language like "fat cats."   I know a lot of people loved his Fox News rant but that's actually a big part of why I'm not a big fan.  I prefer people use facts to make their opposition look foolish, not cliche talking points.

That being said, both Bernero and Whitmer would be far better governors compare to Snyder.

Bernero is more progressive than he sometimes tries to come off.  Sensing the mood, he went way more populist than he usually is even so much as saying he'd welcome ANY voters, even tea partiers.  That said, he's also the first candidate for governor I've ever heard in Michigan come out in favor of gay marriage; not civil unions, but full on gay marriage.  It is correct that while generally pro-choice, he doesn't support, lock-step, everything that Planned Parenthood does.  When it comes to the big things like partial birth abortion, he was eviscerated by the right for voting against banning the practice.

Whitmer is more gimmicky than you think.  A lot of the stuff she's sponsored in the past was pretty frivilous and gimmicky.

when he made that rant. I have to agree that he did really poorly running for governor, though, as the results speak for themselves.

I meant a lot his commercials during his campaign were just terrible.  He's in his element in a debate.  It didn't help he didn't have money for slick productions like Snyder did.  Seeing that a Dem wasn't going to win this year, the party and a lot of third parties kind of sat this one out leaving him blowing in the wind.
