Here in Massachusetts it became fashionable for progressives to identify as independents because the mainstream Democrats seems to flake out, or go DINO so often, no self-respecting liberal progressive could identify with the political party.

I only really became a Democratic again about seven years ago, reinforced by my desire to go along to get along here.

But, everytime we get to a FISA reversal, telecom immunity, undebated Patriot Act extension, or discussing of cuts to social programs without any discussion of cutting the military budget, or returning to Clinton era taxation, I have to bite my lip.

I'm sure there are GOP in the same condition.

This would be useful to untangle because, IMO, Plouffes "Run  to the Right" strategy for the 2012 elections is deeply flawed because of confusion about this distinction.

I think we will get no new votes from the right, but potentially undermine enthusiasm of "left leaning independents, and the party base.  (and yes, I'm familiar with liberals are the base theory.  Talk to the folks doing GOTV and see if a lot of the most passionate volunteer, are motivated by "moderation," and triangulating to the right.

I think if you calculate the partial derivatives playing an authentic strong liberal stance would have yielded a greater return on investment.  Although, it may be too late now.

But, discussions of our Democratic leaders willingess to discuss cuts to Social Security, when the Social Security Trust Fund is solvent until 2037 does not help Democratic Party identification.

Can you blame seniors who say the Democratic Party is no more trustable on this issue than Republicans?

The next few weeks will tell.

We may be seeing the end of both existing Parties.

Cuts to Social Security, Disability, Medicare, Medicaid, and Government Pension with this chained CPI equation change will not go over well.

If the Democratic Party leadership goes with this, we will see a lot more liberals, in places like Massachusetts, declare themselves as independents, so we do not embarrass ourselves at the registration tables.
