    between conservatives and progressives is that the latter are able to see things from the conservatives' perspective and take it into consideration, or discount it. Conservatives can't do that.  At best, they can ascribe their own perspective to others, but, since other people don't share their perspective, what they perceive is wrong -- exactly what they are keen to avoid, being wrong.
    You could say they can't help it because they don't see straight.

    I'm reminded of the advice that while driving a car one ought not look at what one wants to avoid hitting.  Keep your eyes on the road. Conservatives seem to negotiate life looking at the wrong things and not seeing straight. They can't help it. But, as Anne Richards discovered, they really resent having it pointed out that they were born "with a silver foot in the mouth." Making fun of conservatives makes them turn vicious.  Not only can they not see straight; they have no sense of humor.
