"...the way Clinton "modified" AFDC." was the inspiration for this book:

    Nickel and Dimed
On (Not) Getting By in America
    by Barbara Ehrenreich

The New York Times bestseller, and one of the most talked about books of the year, Nickel and Dimed has already become a classic of undercover reportage.

Millions of Americans work for poverty-level wages, and one day Barbara Ehrenreich decided to join them. She was inspired in part by the rhetoric surrounding welfare reform, which promised that any job equals a better life. But how can anyone survive, let alone prosper, on $6 to $7 an hour?

To find out, Ehrenreich moved from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, taking the cheapest lodgings available and accepting work as a waitress, hotel maid, house cleaner, nursing-home aide, and Wal-Mart salesperson. She soon discovered that even the "lowliest" occupations require exhausting mental and physical efforts. And one job is not enough; you need at least two if you intend to live indoors.

Nickel and Dimed reveals low-wage America in all its tenacity, anxiety, and surprising generosity -- a land of Big Boxes, fast food, and a thousand desperate strategies for survival. Instantly acclaimed for its insight, humor, and passion, this book is changing the way America perceives its working poor.

"Nickle and Dimed" came out in 2001~!

This is an excellent article on "Clinton's Folly":

Clinton's Welfare "Reform" Chickens Come Home to Roost

Healthcare isn't the first "reform" to need quotation marks around it. Bill Clinton's signature 90's program of welfare "reform" was pretty much the same kind of Democrat kabuki.

We just hadn't yet realized that Al From and the DLC's strategy called for lies and corporate giveaways on purpose. We thought they just, you know, didn't understand the consequences of what they were doing.

That they were incompetent. Not too hard to believe. Now we know they knew what they were doing and just didn't give a shit.

That might have been the first time the conservaDems stretched their muscles and convinced a still-mostly-liberal party that the way to get elected was to do what the Pubs would have done, thus attracting the campaign funds that would otherwise have gone to the GOP.

Unfortunately, GOP policies to the poor are a disaster no matter who passes them into law, and now that the Bush economy has collapsed, the failure of Clinton's "reform" is so great it can no longer be ignored.

It's a great read. Bill Clinton. What a guy.
