  •  We are spending more (19+ / 0-)

because we have an aging population. And they planned for that when they designed those programs. SS is solvent until at least 2036 and can be permanantly fixed by raising the income cap. Medicare is in rougher shape, but can be easily fixed by enacting real health reform to drive down costs or, ideally making it available for ALL- the only sane choice in my opinion.

Please stop making it seem as if progressives don't care about the solvency of these programs, or fiscal responsibility in general. We consistantly put forward solutions that are actually MORE fiscally sound (i.e. The People's Budget, which would eliminate the defecit years before the defecit ballooning Ryan Plan) and are in line with what the majority of people in this country-even republicans-view as the more fair approach. The idea that progressive=reckless spending is a disgusting lie put out there by the right wing and has absolutely no basis in reality. The truth is, 75% of our defecit was run up under republicans, and the only 2 presidents that balanced the budget in the past 40 years were democrats. We care about these programs and I do not know of a single progressive who would not be open to reforming them in order to make them stronger- but you do NOT have to make cuts to beneficiaries in order to accomplish that!
