cool people better than ice water.

    •  That would be because of the ice particles. (5+ / 0-)

By the numbers, an amount X of liquid water will have a higher temperature than that same amount of water that is half ice, because ice is of a lower temperature.

The problem comes with slushy drinks usually being not only water, but also other things too, like artifical flavors and sugars and stuff that may not all be that constructive in the digestion. Water by itself doesn't spur the digestive tract to start redirecting blood away from other places to swing by the intestine to pick up nutrition. Sugar waters and such does do that, to some extent.

Also, slushy drinks like that coolata contain air, which isn't all that awesome to have bubbling around in you as your body is trying to use available liquids to shuffle heat away from the core to the skin where more liquids evaporate that heat away. I've had some coolatta cramps from accumulated gas by trying to use slushy drinks for cool off. Unpleasant.

In theory as I understand it, and in personal experience, drinking water from a bottle as it melts - which would be at just about 1 degree celsius because of the ice - gives the best results on cooling.

        Thanks for the details!

I wasn't necessarily thinking commercial slushy drinks.  I figured you could achieve the same effect using frozen ingredients and a blender.

(For example, I have heard that chocolate milk is an excellent exercise drink.)
