    Totally agreed.

    •  Got tired of them after half a dozen, years ago. (3+ / 0-)

Recently read one of the newer ones (with Todd as co-author), and it didn't hold me.

As a book to recommend to random passersby, though, I choose the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson ('Red Mars', 'Green Mars', 'Blue Mars').  Truly an epic portrayal of the terraforming of that planet.  The science is quite good, the characters interesting, and plausible politics making it seem like history.  The clincher comes at the end of the final book, 'Blue Mars' when a little girl cries because she dropped her ice cream cone on a beach. On the ocean. On Mars.  I actually cried tears of joy when the enormity of it finally hit home.  Have to re-read it now, after all this hype.

Real plastic here; none of that new synthetic stuff made from chicken feathers. By the morning of 9/12/2001 the people of NYC had won the War on Terror.

I picked up and read "Green Mars" before realizing it was part of a series.  And I agree - the series is a great read.
