  •  What a beauty (4+ / 0-)

I miss riding sometimes. Sold the last horse over 5 years ago. Which was about the time Karl starting getting sick; I'd never be able to afford a horse now on only one income.

But so much of dressage is mental that I still ride in my head often. I can still feel that first real collected canter and those canter pirouettes and half passes and the time I got to ride piaffe on my trainer's Grand Prix horse.

    •  There is a fantasy author you might enjoy (3+ / 0-)

Judith Tarr is a writer and a Lipizzan breeder. She's written some more literary pieces under her own name about a horse-centric primitive culture (like Lady of Horses) and a romance series under the name Caitlin Brennan that starts with The Mountain's Call where the magic users of the world are paired with Lipizzan-like god-horses and large works of magic are done by riding quadrilles.

There's also a romance called The Gift about dressage on Portuguese horses by Kirk Douglas (the actor!) that is very horsey and compelling though not great literature.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

is the expense. The few times I've been horseless in my adult life I've done what you do and visualize/remember great rides I've had. I don't compete anymore, so my new vicarious thrill is watching helmet cams on You Tube of 3-Day cross country rides. Now THAT is even better than simple remembrance. I haven't seen any cam rides of upper levels of dressage, but I imagine that it could translate to those who have actually experienced the movements.  :-)

All I pay my psychiatrist is the cost of feed and hay, and he'll listen to me any day. ~Author Unknown
