    looks like it's only to estimate what the correlations would have been among the full applicant pools, instead of the reduced r's in the narrower group of those who were admitted and accepted admission.

    From seeing lots of freshmen in various areas in a huge state school, I'd say that those r's would be substantially increased even more if there were also controls for the very different courses different students take even freshman year. In science courses, in particular, most students admitted to some of the programs would have little chance of passing the courses routinely taken by the students in other large programs.

    I don't know of any data on whether that increase in r's would be bigger for HSGPA or SAT. I've heard anecdotal reports from a single huge course suggesting that ACT (sort of like SAT) may be a better predictor for performance, but that can't take the place of real data.
