  •  excellent diaries, tough issues (9+ / 0-)

Sometimes the harder the issues are, the more complex, the more people seem to grasp for easy answers. This is an excellent summary of the forces against public education right now.  As a parent and someone with relatives and dear friends who are teachers it is something I think about a great deal.  I think some first steps for society would be: acknowledging that children enter school at very different levels; articulating the fact that there are different kinds of intelligence, some not measured by standardized tests, that are needed by society and should be cherished; realizing what an extraordinary difficult job teaching is, that even good teachers can have bad days or bad years, and supporting a system that works with those teachers and with those individuals who may be in the wrong job.  Not sure we could even agree with all those points here though.
