  •  I don't believe exposure will make much difference (5+ / 0-)

to ALEC unless there's something technically illegal going on. It is to late to roll corporate governance of this country back. The left in this country chose, for a number of reasons, not to adopt a militant stance towards things it claimed to care about and now we have an emergent neo-feudal system. What next? Certainly not conventional politics which is rigged and gamed at every level by smart people. Step one is waking up and realizing that politics is about the use of force and to get force the dissident left has to establish communities, alternative institutions, and solidarity. In addition, some cross-pollinization with the anti-authoritarian right might be in order because the initial problem will be that these rigged elections and rigged legislatures will tend to create police-states.

    •  I believe ALEC is doing something in violation of (5+ / 0-)

its 501(c)3 exemption. I am not a lawyer, but I am retired from a 501(c)3 where I spent many years in close contact with lawyers who specialized in not-for-profit law making sure our organization stayed on the right side of those IRS regulations.

Of course, ALEC could simply change its exemption, heck, a bowling league can get a 501(c) exemption from paying taxes. The difference is that only a 501(c)3 can receive contributions which are also tax deductible for the donors.

The question is whether so many big corporations would continue to contribute if they couldn't take the deductions. I think most of them would. They have other interests at stake in this matter. The tax deduction isn't the biggest one.

      •  Not so sure about that (0+ / 0-)

If the money is coming out of their charitable foundation funds they aren't going after any exemption for the gifts to ALEC. Haven't they already gotten the exemption by putting the money in their foundation?

      •  However along with the tax deductions is a (0+ / 0-)

transparency that will allow these "scholarship" drives to raise funding to become reported as contributions.  It isn't just the money, it is the influence they wield through ALEC.  There's more to come out yet and once the picture is complete I'm hopeful the IRS, FBI and public knowledge will erase them and their kind from existence.  We will be left with the damages they wrought and it will take years to fix that, but hopefully we can impose legislation and oversight to see that this doesn't happen again.
