  •  Starting reading with a groan of "not another (11+ / 0-)

flame diary about religion" (although I can't seem to resist reading them even as I dread them), and ended being happy it was written.  You've provided a thoughtful analysis and a great way to look at the issue.  I hope lots of people read it - and listen.  Could perhaps go a long way towards damping the flames.

BTW, being both a woman and an atheist (born into a fundamentalist religious family, all of whom continue being religious), I find the atheist part makes my life more difficult than the woman part.  Perhaps because I fought the sexist battles early in my life and won as much as I was able in my time, so don't deal with it on quite the regular basis.  But I believe it's more because of the downright disgust so many of the majority feel towards the minority in the religious/atheist world.  You literally become a nonentity in much of life once your lack of a belief in a god becomes known.

I check out a lot of religion-oriented diaries thinking I shouldn't...I know what you mean there.

I tend to downplay the troubles atheism causes me because, well, for me they haven't been so bad. I mean, 'atheist president' (cue lulz) sums up the discrimination issue, nice and concise. I can also acknowledge that it's an abstraction for me. I'll never get the chance to go so far, not that I would want to, really. But it does bother me to see the actual candidates all playing 'who's the better Christian.'

Hopefully this diary makes the case for justified anger, as opposed to bigotry/intolerance. Righteous fury, even.

I'm finding a lot of things funny lately. But I don't think they are. -- Ripley
