  •  My uncle was part of the ALB, lost his (11+ / 0-)

eyesight when a hand grenade exploded at his feet....almost died.  He was mentioned in passing in one of Hemingway's books.

Some years later (between 1943-1947)my dad was working at Wright Patterson AFB in the pattern-making department and several fellows from FBI/CIA (or similar organization) came and told him to clear out his workspace and go home.  Seems my uncle, his brother, was going around the country giving speeches about the ALB and the good folks in charge of our nation's security couldn't have a "communist's" brother working at one of our military installations, doncha know.

I, too, haven't read the post yet, but will definitely do so.  Thanks for contributing this......will help me fill in some huge gaps in my knowledge of this organization and the people who are and were a part of it.

    •  I Knew a Fair Bit (7+ / 0-)

... about the Abraham Lincoln Brigade volunteers even before writing this diary. I studied them at length in undergrad school.  I must tell you that my respect for these men and women has gone up several fold in the past few weeks.

Can you imagine any of us giving up our lives, going to a foreign land we know virtually nothing about, and fighting in a war that our own government (let alone most of the American people) is opposing or indifferent about?  In today's climate, it is unthinkable.

Thanks everyone for your recs and thoughtful comments.  I'll be back in a few minutes to respond to additional comments.

    •  Your heroic uncle cruelly targeted because (9+ / 0-)

      he was a PMAF.

My grandpa was a PMAF, but didn't follow his buddies in the brigade to Spain. He died when I was little, but my mom used to regale me with tales of sitting around the house listening to the vets tell the tales of the struggle. She was a good soul & a precocious PMAF herself.

True, Franco & his pals ended up winning-but the good side weren't rollovers. A case could be made that the length & horrible human & financial destruction of the civil war is what made the fossil Franco piss on Hilter's attempt at Hendaye to pull Spain into WWII-thus preventing Axis seizure of Gibraltar & sinking of Brit's position in the Med. Thus possibly keeping the ambiguous French on the fence (albeit teetering to the wrong side) & their fleet in dock.

No struggle against Fascism is futile.
