    There really was such a thing:

    This was a particle detected in 1991 that had 40 million times more energy than the Large Hadron Collider can ever manage.  

    It was going 0.9999999999999999999999951 c when it collided with Earth's atmosphere.

    Over a LIGHTYEAR this proton would be 46 nanometers behind the photon (about the distance between transistors in a Core2Duo Intel or AMD Athlon II processor.)
