    The use of mercenaries is a violation of widely established international law.

    The opinion of the founding fathers on mercenaries is encapsulated in our National Anthem, third versa...their footsteps so pollute the earth on which they tread that only blood sacrifice can cleanse it.  Readers will note that this sentiment is not precisely consistent with the claim that the founding fathers were all conventional Christians.

    Also, under widely accepted international law, mercenaries are not protected by the Geneva convention.  If they, e.g., kill someone, it is murder.

    This gem came up recently with respect to the Gaddafi mercenaries.  I borrow the text from wikipedia.
        Art 47. Mercenaries

            1. A mercenary shall not have the right to be a combatant or a prisoner of war.
            2. A mercenary is any person who:

                (a) is especially recruited locally or abroad in order to fight in an armed conflict;
                (b) does, in fact, take a direct part in the hostilities;
                (c) is motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a Party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party;
                (d) is neither a national of a Party to the conflict nor a resident of territory controlled by a Party to the conflict;
                (e) is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict; and
                (f) has not been sent by a State which is not a Party to the conflict on official duty as a member of its armed forces.

    The use of condottieri is also a primary indicator that your nation is about to collapse, namely you cannot get your own people to  fight for you, which says what your people think of your stinking wars, it is a fair guess that your leadership is getting kickbacks to choose who they hire, and sooner or later the condottieri will work out that rather than dealing with the folks who own the national treasury they should just take it for themselves.

    We can have change for the better.

      Seems like the US should not ever draft non-citizens, or give citizenship prior to shipping such personnel out.

      This was the case during WW2. Family friend was drafted and sometime during boot camp made US citizen. As his training was in Alabama and he was Polish, drafted in Brooklyn, NY it took a while for him to understand what had just transpired 8-)).
