  •  Oh for crying out loud. Who cares what was SAID (9+ / 0-)

in the negotiations? What matters is what legislation is passed. The negotiations are ridiculous but I'm not going to pile on this anti-Obama shit when NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET.

One of the  front runners for the Republican nomination urged investigations into members of Congress for being anti-American. We have got to get our shit together and stop all of this hand wringing when nothing to wring over has even happened.

With sincere apologies to Meteor Blades, who I know detests this picture...

    •   Either we've been fucked over already (13+ / 0-)

and shouldn't look back since it's already been done, or nothing has happened yet so we should just say nothing until something does.

      Got it.

Trust the strong leader, and cease to be an engaged citizen in a republic.

Be aware of what's going on, including being aware that a lot of what is speculated about in the press and on political blogs are not true. Try to read as much as possible to discover what is true and what is speculation and discuss the issues. rather than ascribing motivation and engaging in hyperbole.

Look at the actual sources as much as possible and look at the whole thing rather than picking out one detail to get upset about. The Simpson Bowles co-chair's draft proposal is  a perfect example. People heard that the tax proposals were for lowering marginal rates, but they failed to note that it also called for capital gains and dividends to be taxed at ordinary income rates which would result in a higher effective rate for the wealthy and actually result in a more progressive tax structure than we have now. They also failed to note that it called for the FICA tax cap to be increased to capture 90% of income, rather than the 82% it is now. They ignored that it called for a minimum benefit for Social Security (which we don't have now) and that the minimum benefit be indexed by wage inflation.

Then call or write the WH and Congressfolk expressing your opinion about what should or should not happen and try to get others to do so also.

It is not mutually exclusive to be an engaged citizen and not have a conniption fit every time a rumor is floated. Because to be an engaged citizen, one has to be an informed citizen IMO.
