  •  The US has a youth fetish (6+ / 0-)

I saw the stark contrast when I served in Europe in the USAF during the '60's & '70's.  Europeans are generally cool and wonderful people who believe in a strong social safety net for those who are old, sick, poor, disabled, the weak, etc.  What's more, there was a genuine respect (not a patronizing, condescending, begrudging respect - a true respect) for the elderly who are included in every day life and are considered valuable members of families, organizations, public agencies, etc.

There is such worship of youth in the US.  We are stuck in national adolescence.  We are ruled by the Advertising Industry and they generally do not want old people selling their shiny new things.  America loves shiny new things.  Americans have always lined up to buy snake oil from the charlatans.  I admit I cannot get away from the consumer gene that all Americans are born with.  My purchases are not driven by OCD or competing with my neighbors or "keeping up with the Joneses," a '60's term, but I am gullible at times and must always remain on guard.  TV ads are so intrusive into our lives, our very beings.  Now, Big Pharma owns the networks and drives home the need for more and more new drugs 24/7 and the sell is relentless.

We are captive.  We will not escape unless the system is forced in some cataclysmic way to change.  I cannot predict how and when that will happen.  In the mean time, I advise everyone to seek peace and good simple meals and entertainment that is not costly in your every day lives.  Hug one another.  Don't buy another  bauble at Tiffany's or even K-Mart.  Those things really are not that important.  Oh, and buy a car that gets at leat 40 mpg hwy.  I found one.

I cut off cable television from my life when I was 17 years old.  14 years later, I don't miss it one bit.  The only time I get to watch TV these days is at the gym, and I stick it firmly on Food network or the learning channel or something so I can justify the brain cells.

We are stuck in national adolescence.

Everything has a life cycle and this is exactly where we are in our current state of national evolution. It is part of the reason why we see such a different national vision in countries that have been around for more than 230 years.

Inspiration is hard to come by. You have to take it where you find it. --- Bob Dylan.
