  •  I'm sitting here with a camera pen (11+ / 0-)

My partner and I do industrial security. VERY small cameras, some wireless, are available cheaply and record amazing amounts of good video.

My point is, if you're obviously holding up a cell phone and taking video, they  (thugs, maybe the police) will grab your cell phone and crush it or take out (Steal) the smart card/memory.

But if you have an unobtrusive recording device, like a pen in your shirt pocket that can record an hour of video. no one will know you are recording the event. And if trouble comes, you won't be in the net for taking pictures.

Just a suggestion. The technology is there. Search for "pen camera" in google. $27 up. Other types of sub-miniature video/audio cameras are available. Sad to say, we might need to proactively protect ourselves at our own meetings or demonstrations.

and the comment above "NO VIDEO, NO STORY".  Ask Rodney King.

    •  Everyone should have a camera (1+ / 0-)

at these events.  I think grabbing your camera is a little over the line, even for these folks, but if it happens, there should be lots of other cameras documenting THAT.  There's no question that would be assault and theft.  If you have it on video.

And it doesn't have to be an expensive camera.  Any camera will work.

I'm going to look into that.  I'm pretty brazen about being out there with my camera. And since it's on a big strap around my neck, it would be fairly hard (but not impossible) for someone to just grab it from me.

But I do like the idea of a pen camera.  For the just in case moments. I'll check that out!!

I also haven't learned really how to use the video feature on it.  I need to do that more.

I'm all for democratizing the media, even if it makes it so making a living as a photographer is getting harder by the day.

      •  Video is what makes the case. (1+ / 0-)

I hated to think like this, and applauded people who used their phones. But that's too obvious anymore. Making video (as opposed to editing video, like O'keefe and Brietbart) is simply making a record of what happened. It's a shame that we have to do that quietly, secretly,  but there you are. Everyone has their own video, everyone has their version of events. Might be wrong, depending on point of view, but it's better than nothing.
