  •  I used to live in Darling's district. It is not (0+ / 0-)

all wealthy. Also a ton of teachers live there. I mean Milwaukee Public School teachers. There is also UW Milwaukee there, isn't that right? Is Brown Deer also part of that district?

Any idea on how many more may turn out for the elections vs. the fake primaries?

    •  Brown Deer (4+ / 0-)

Brown Deer is in this district.  I took 2 of my nieces to Milwaukee City Hall to vote early at around 2pm today.  There were a number of people (5-7) who were registering to vote at that time.  When I drove them home there was a vote party being held at a church by their house (40th and Good Hope).  Parking lot was about 3/4 full with vans taking people down to vote.  Turnout from new voters and voters in Milwaukee wards will make a big difference and probably aren't being weighed in all the polls.

    •  Yes, UW-Milwaukee is in the southern tip (1+ / 0-)

of the district, the small part of the city of Milwaukee that is in the district, although it always described as entirely suburban.

And UWM is a campus of more than 30,000 with many thousands of state employees who are Walker's main targets.  Many have lost collective bargaining rights and will lose 10% or more of their paychecks starting this fall to his huge hikes in health insurance and pension costs.  They are extremely active in this and have been for months, many of them marching to and in Madison.

But many in the UWM area also are among the 30,000-plus students -- approximately 12,000 living on or within half a mile of campus, and those to the east, west, and north of campus are in the 8th Senate District.  That has been good for Dems in past elections, as Wisconsin is second-highest in the country of all states for 18-to-25-year-old turnout.

However, whether that will be so in this unusual summer election is the unknown.  The student turnout has been the result of excellent GOTV efforts on campus for years -- but that has not been possible in summer, with far fewer students on campus for summer courses.
