    we didn't use our point of maximal leverage--the upcoming expiration of the Bush tax cuts--to greater advantage.

    However, it's possible that the administration believed that either that Wall Street and Big Money would cut this short without much trouble, while driving a wedge through the Rs, or that it's to their political benefit to reveal the extremism of the Republican caucus this starkly.

    (The second idea is pretty completely undercut by Obama's conciliatory language, though.)

    Or maybe Obama just wants to see what a $2 trillion coin looks like. Honestly, I don't know. The whole thing is so dispiriting.
