Matt appears to presume that Obama is on the progressive side in these negotiations, which anybody with even a passing acquaintance with Obama's prounouncements on entitlement "reform" would know is baloney.

The game of chicken over the debt ceiling was telegraphed by teabag candidates and officials even before the election last year.  It has been in no possible way a surprise, and Obama should have known last December that it was going to be used this year.  To sell out so cheaply last December on the Bush tax cuts, getting only a previously-routine unemployment extension (and not even for all the unemployed) was the worst cave since he pre-emptively sold out the health care bill to Billy Tauzin and PhRMA.

Obama's a preternaturally bad negotiator, and his skills don't seem to be improving over time.  It's getting hard to avoid the conclusion that his crummy negotiating tactics are a feature, not a bug of his administration.

DC politicians don't realize they're corrupt for the same reason fish don't realize they're wet.
