  •  You called this the "Rule of Thumb" (1+ / 0-)

It was never referred to by that name even by those who accepted it, and it should not be referred to with that name here (except perhaps with a disclaimer, marking its use as a pun, which is how this myth all started.)

I won't continue arguing the point, because this is close to a thread hijack, but I think you're mistaken to defend your use of the phrase that way.

Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.

    •  The US Civil Rights Commission called (0+ / 0-)

judicial decisions that allowed a husband to beat wives with a "switch no larger than a thumb" the "rule of thumb":

This "rule of thumb" stipulated that a man could only beat his wife with a "rod not thicker than his thumb."

This 1982 report by the Civil Rights Commission is called:

"Under the Rule of Thumb: Battered Women and the Administration of Justice"

Anti-feminists try to say the rule of thumb is a myth by focusing on whether it  originated in English common law rather than looking at the rules determined by US courts and therefore argue wife beating was never legal.
