  •  People knew I was not administrative (0+ / 0-)

because I dressed down.  Of course, you can get away with looking like a slob in the West.  I would be called to the front lobby with it's marble, potted plants and show case receptionists.  I had my hair in long braids, turquoise jewelry, coffee spilled down the front of my flannel shirt, jeans with gunk all over them from wiping pookie off on them.  I had on a little eye make up.
The guys in fancy suits meeting me there would kiss my ass because judging from my appearance, they figured I was in charge of spending big money on my projects or was the holder of technical secrets and responsibilities.  They were right.  Being casual, free and competent was my armor.

    •  Amen! (0+ / 0-)

When I worked in little shops where we were all tech, my one big request was that my desk not be closest to the door. Fortunately, everyone pretty much got why that was important.

Also, I specifically and deliberately did not start drinking coffee in any form until I was in my 30's. If I didn't drink it, no one could ask me to make it, I figured.

I also looked young for my age, so when I was working on the space program, I looked about 16. "Oh," said the guard at TRW, "are you here on a student observing program?"

"No," I replied. "I'm running your test today." And he was properly embarrassed.

      •  All this reminds me how lucky I was (0+ / 0-)

to work with a really great bunch of guys in my first job, a group that mentored me and gave me great challenges and really taught me how to be. I wish everyone could be as fortunate.
