  •  Reid knows he's got 53 votes against it (15+ / 0-)

Like Reid says:  "it doesn't matter if it passes the House".  It's a dead deal in the Senate...end of story.

Then, and I think ONLY then will true negotiations on a legitimate "compromise" will happen.

Right now they're just going through an exercise in chest pounding.

      Dropping the second vote.

The question is what Boehner extracts for that.  they could add in the war savings to boost what  both sides can brag they have cut, but he wants real cuts to domestic spending.

The real crunch is over the enforcement mechanism for the cuts that have to come down the road.  Both have a commission, but what happens if uthe commission can't agree or if one House won't pass its recommendations.  The ultimate consequence is the Bush tax cuts expire.  But how to make it enforceable for this Congress next year is the big sticking point.

After the 2012 election all bets are off.  Nothing can bind the nextCongress, which makes it imperative to elect more progressives.

The scientific uncertainty doesn't mean that climate change isn't actually happening.
