Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the nation of Haiti near the town of Léogâne, just west of the capital of Port-au-Prince. An estimated 230,000 people died, and more than 1 million people were left homeless. Hundreds of thousands of buildings were damaged, including the Presidential Palace and the UN Stabilization Mission.
