A picture is worth a thousands words and today's front page of the New York Daily News is probably worth even more, depicting a knife in the back of the Statue of Liberty after House Speaker John Boehner prevented a Sandy aid bill from coming to a vote before the close of the 112th Congress.
The worst part of Boehner's behavior? Per the Daily News this was all a political game of payback against Cantor because he opposed the fiscal cliff bill.
The money — approved by the Senate last week — was supposed to come up for a House vote on Wednesday, the last full day of business by the outgoing Congress. And while Boehner's office denied the claim, the News reported that the story was confirmed by both a Republican and Democratic source.
But sources told the Daily News that Boehner pulled the package from consideration as retaliation against Cantor for opposing the “fiscal cliff” compromise that the House passed on Tuesday.
As my senior senator, Chuck Schumer, said, it's always nice to see:
We got caught in a crossfire of Beltway leadership squabbles."I hope John Boehner enjoys his re-election as Speaker today. He's getting it while he lets his fellow Americans continue to suffer because it seems he's more interested in scoring some political points. That's the last thing any of us need, irrespective of our politics or where we live.
