Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Please begin with an informative title:

Of all the people down through history who have gotten a raw deal, the Native Americans have to be right in there at the top. The tragedy of that history is compounded for me by the strong affinity I feel for the peoples of the First Nations. That is somewhat beside the point though, for I would advocate for any people who needed assistance. We are all family after all.

You must enter an Intro for your Diary Entry between 300 and 1150 characters long (that's approximately 50-175 words without any html or formatting markup).

Mitakuye Oyasin

There is a simple but profound Lakota prayer: Mitakuye Oyasin.

These two words mean All My Relations or We are All Related.

To pray this prayer is to petition God on behalf of everyone and everything on Earth.
Mitakuye Oyasin honors the sacredness of each person's individual spiritual path, acknowledges the sacredness of all life (human, animal, plant, etc.) and creates an energy of awareness which strengthens not only the person who prays but the entire planet.

Okiciyap is Lakota for 'we help.' What could be better than helping someone out who really needs it? We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers after all. What better expression of all that is best in humanity than to reach out and help a fellow human being in need?

We are an odd species, I suppose it's fair to say. When we're not scamming each other we're killing each other, or so it can seem. We are a decidedly mixed bag of traits and characteristics, from predatory instincts and genocidal acts to charity and selflessness, one never knows what one might find in our particular box of chocolates. Of our many widely ranging qualities, the one I most admire, the one that gives me hope and keeps me from agreeing with those who say we are scum, is that of altruism.

the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others
(opposed to egoism).
This most human characteristic is the shiny side of humanity. It is what redeems us, in my opinion. It is what I admire most in humankind and what I love most about liberals. We are an altruistic lot. You can see it here among kossacks, who possess this trait in spades. It's the main reason I am proud to call myself one. It's why I love Okiciyap.

The best way I know to celebrate being human is to reach out and help someone in need.
