Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Rumors of discord between Mother Jones and John Mitchell continue.

Although the relationship appears to be publicly cordial, rumors persist of trouble brewing between John Mitchell and his employee, Mother Jones. At the basis of the conflict lies the National Civic Federation. Mother Jones is a fierce opponent of that organization, often heard to heap scorn upon the head of Mark Hanna, N.C.F. President. John Mitchell who is President of the United Mine Workers, and Vice-President of the American Federation of Labor, is a charter member of that organization, along with Samuel Gompers, head of the A.F.L.

The National Civic Federation was founded in late 1900 with the goal of adjusting the differences of Capital and Labor and to promote peace and harmony in the industrial world. Labor critics of that organization claim that its real objective is control of labor unions from above. They argue that that these labor leaders are engaged in class collaboration and are robbing workers of their fighting spirit. Hellraisers would not oppose these effort at labor peace were the ruling class not engage in an unending battle to smash our unions and impoverish our people by any means deemed necessary, up to and including murder.

Denver, Colorado - Mass Arrests of Soapbox Rebels

Another large group of Wobbly Free Speech Fighters has been arrest in this city. They have been sentenced to 61 days in jail and vow to go on a hunger strike for that entire time. They have informed the city authorities that the cost of burying them will fall on the city since "61 days is ample time for all of us to starve." Some of those arrested are from the group that was recently led into Denver by Fellow Worker Frank Little.

From In These Times: and article by Jeremy Gantz on staggering exploitation.

...The scope and persistence of forced and child labor around the globe is staggering. A vast army of the oppressed toils away in such diverse workplaces as Uzbek cotton fields, Indian rice mills and African diamond mines.

Of the 21 million victims of forced labor, 4.5 are exploited sexually, 1.5 million are in developed countries (including the United States), about 2 million are trapped in state-run facilities, and 5.5 million are children. Two-thirds of victims—14 million—are forced into private-sector work such as agriculture, construction and manufacturing. Their ultra low-cost labor helps to feed multinationals’ profits.

In its most recent annual list of goods produced with forced labor and child labor, the Department of Labor detailed 134 goods made in 74 countries. Alarmingly, not one country or good has been removed from this list since the first edition was published in 2009. To the contrary: It keeps growing....

Broken Dreams

I have seen mothers, take their babes and slap cold water in their face to wake the poor little things. I have watched them all day long tending the dangerous machinery. I have seen their helpless limbs torn off, and then when they were disabled and of no more use to their master, thrown out to die.
