Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.
For the complete list of DailyKos diary guidelines, please click here.

What are your favorite apps?
How about your favorite online entertainments (or time-wasters)?

sidepocket made me do it.

This country girl rube who didn't even own a cell phone was introduced to modern conveniences by the youthfully 70ish tech-savant when we caught a ride with the sidepockets from the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to a nearby restaurant for a bout of food pr0n and kossack conversation. While I wondered how he expected to find the place (pNut and I would have been arguing over an unfolded map before even starting the car), sidepocket whipped out his Android phone as we pulled out of the parking garage, set it on the console, and said, "Directions to Park Chow restaurant."  The calm female voice from his smartphone then guided us step by step around the park ("Turn right on 9th street in 1,000 yards") and deposited us at the front door of the restaurant without a single tense exchange between partners or passengers.

Can you imagine how many marriages this one app has already saved?

To someone with a non-functioning sense of direction who can get lost in the backyard and can't read a map well enough to be any kind of co-pilot, this was nothing short of a miracle. I wanted that phone, even while knowing I wouldn't have much use for it around the garden. When I got home, though, I found that I could get a 'droid (see how quickly I adapt to the lingo) on a pay-as-you-go basis, making it both affordable and irresistible.

Right now I've used it once to make a phone call from the grocery store, to text (I've only texted a girl once, and I liked it), and to snap pictures with the camera and then email them to myself via WiFi, a far handier arrangement than using a regular digital camera. Next time we travel (NN13!) I can turn on the data package for just one month and have its full range of internet capabilities, including the utterly awesome Navigator app I fell in love with.

There's a whole world of apps out there I'm itching to play with. When jotter visited he showed me Shazaam, another awesome app where you hold the phone up to the source of any song and it identifies it, offers to play it on its internet radio, and even offers to download it for you.

A brand new time-waster has entered the fold.

What are your favorite apps for a tablet, phone or other device? When on your computer and you're looking for fun or distraction where do you go on the internet (besides pootie diaries)? I sometimes will wander about StumbleUpon for inspiration, which recently yielded the Magic Button to Make Everything OK and the charmingly weird Draw a Stickman site, that takes your clumsy stick figure and animates it through all kinds of adventures (also available for iPad).

Can You Believe there's an app for that?

Let's say you're going to Iceland for a wedding. Since Iceland has only 320,000 residents there's a higher-than-average chance that your new friend at the reception might unwittingly hook up with a cousin. But you've got the handy app for that:
According to its Google Play store description, the app provides Icelanders with easy viewing of their relationship with others, and the ability to learn about their family on the go. There is, however, an "Incest Prevention" feature that will alert users — via sound and text — if they are too closely related to someone. By "bumping" phones together ("bömpa" in Icelandic), two people can instantly see how they are related.

The moral of the story, as the app's official slogan put it: "Bump in the app before you bump in bed."

So tell me-- where do you play around and distract yourself on the internet, and what are your favorite phone, tablet, or computer apps? Show me how you virtually roll!

Cheers & Jeers-* New Day * Dinner

TIME: 5:30 PM
LOCATION: The Brit (Britannia Arms)
173 W. Santa Clara St. (walking distance from Conv. Center) • Downtown San Jose

Every year since 2007, Common Sense Mainer has organized a dinner for the readers of Cheers & Jeers who attend Netroots Nation. It has grown every year. Last year we had over 100 Kossacks attend. CSM always chooses a restaurant willing to handle a large crowd WITH SEPARATE CHECKS. (!?!) Yes, I know, hard to believe but it's worked the last several years. This year CSM has negotiated with The Brit for a special menu and separate checks are secured. If you'd like to join us please leave a comment in this diary and you'll be put on the RSVP list below. This year * New Day * and SFKossacks are co-hosting. All regional groups are invited to attend in addition to the loyal C&J following that Bill and Michael have.

ORGANIZER: Send navajo a kosmail to attend or leave a comment.

The plenary table list below will also be the RSVP list for this event. Dinner attendees will have an asterisk by their name.
