Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.
For the complete list of DailyKos diary guidelines, please click here.

...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.

What is your most awkward memory?

Sometimes awkward moments are so awkward that they are almost epiphanies.

One day I was working in my favorite Jewish restaurant when an elderly Nazi came in. Of course, I didn't know he was a Nazi at first. He sat at the counter and said he just wanted a cup of coffee. I didn't think much about his accent until he nervously asked, "So...this is a Jew...ish restaurant?"

As I was standing in front of a row of Matzoh boxes at the time and Klezmer music was playing, it would've seemed to be a redundant question. Perhaps it should've also just seemed an innocent question.

However, I had just returned from living in Mexico. While there I had written about Hitler's early life up to the point of the outbreak of WWII, focusing on the irony (& ultimately tragic consequences) of his self-view as an artist.

Some part of my brain screamed at me, "This is a Nazi, make him admit it!" Another part screamed even louder, "WTF is he doing here? Did he come in by accident, for redemption, or to ridicule?"

Somehow instinct took over. "Are you Russian" I asked him (though of course I knew he was not).

"No, I'm German."

His team
"Oh, that's too bad. I was just reading about General Vlasov and thought if you were a Russian I could ask you about him."

He put down his coffee. His eyes sparkled & I realized he was looking directly at me as he exclaimed with an exaggeratedly marked longing,

"Andrey...Andreyevich...Vlasov!"

The world stopped. I could no longer hear the clamor of dishes or the sounds of Klezmer.

He spoke describing the Russian traitor's role. He mentioned many German names I wasn't familar with. His words betrayed not just the fact that he'd been a Nazi, but that he still held a deep & bitter grudge against other Nazis with whom he had quarrelled with over Vlasov's potential role as a Nazi puppet. I vividly recall hearing the phrase, "We could've won the war if only they'd listened...."

I felt extremely awkward for many reasons. Conflicting courses of action raced through my brain.

"Get out, we don't serve Nazis!"
"How about an apology for the genocide?"

His presence was a slap in the face for many reasons. Relatives of mine had been lost in the Holocaust. I had just gone through Hell to bring my infant son into this country from Mexico...while he seemed to be an honored guest here. I thought about slapping him. I looked around the restaurant and everyone else was just carrying on as though life was still normal.

Then he asked me, after having just explained which team he had played on,
"With all your knowledge, what are you doing here?"

Had we just bonded?
Did he think I was an Aryan?

My team.
Then, oddly enough, I blurted out in a soft voice the condensed version of my own life's story. I told him which team I'd been on. I mentioned my mom's lifelong struggle against Fascism (here & abroad), her surprise at learning the man she married in the '40s was Jewish & not half-Black, her pride in her indigenous daughter-in-law, in my involvement in the Anti-Apartheid movement, & in my sister's role as a LGBT activist.

It seemed an eternity that we then stared at each other across decades of cultural revolutions without saying anything else, but it was probably only 10-15 seconds.

Awkward.

I knew I'd never meet another actual Nazi again, let alone one who had had access to those initiating policy on the Eastern front. No matter. His time had come and gone. The time for kids like my infant son was on the horizon. The time of Mischlinge had come.

For a moment, I no longer felt awkward.

I turned and walked away. When I came back to the counter a few minutes later he was gone. All that remained of him was a handful of change on the counter.

I began feeling awkward again. I continued feeling awkward about the incident for quite a while. Still do sometimes.

What about you? Do you have memories of awkward moments that haunt you still?

These tables have been organized for our groups to connect during NN13 in the plenary sessions. This is where the opening and closing keynotes take place along with many noon-time-speaking events. Box lunches are sometimes provided and it's great to have a place reserved with familiar faces. If you're attending you're invited to start a table or sit at any of the established ones. Just let me know in the comments or send me a Kosmail. Please note: This is not assigned seating. You may sit at any of the reserved tables at any time. I plan to move around and mingle. There will be over 2500 people there so being able to find each other is nice.

Cheers & Jeers - * New Day * Dinner

TIME: 5:30 PM
LOCATION: The Brit (Britannia Arms)
173 W. Santa Clara St. (walking distance from Conv. Center) • Downtown San Jose

Every year since 2007, Common Sense Mainer has organized a dinner for the readers of Cheers & Jeers who attend Netroots Nation. It has grown every year. Last year we had over 100 Kossacks attend. CSM always chooses a restaurant willing to handle a large crowd WITH SEPARATE CHECKS. (!?!) Yes, I know, hard to believe but it's worked the last several years. This year CSM has negotiated with The Brit for a special menu and separate checks are secured. If you'd like to join us please leave a comment in this diary and you'll be put on the RSVP list below. This year * New Day * and SFKossacks are co-hosting. All regional groups are invited to attend in addition to the loyal C&J following that Bill and Michael have.

ORGANIZER: Send navajo a kosmail to attend or leave a comment.

And the above event is followed by the official opening event featuring Howard Dean:
