Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Virginia is poised to give us an early look at the political fallout of the GOP's Cruz-control strategy. And indications right now are encouraging.

Goal ThermometerThere is, of course, Democrat Terry McAuliffe's expanding lead in the polling. But forgive me if that doesn't really get me excited. Our chances at the state legislative level, on the other hand, are a different matter.

We, of course, have endorsed four Democrats in the House of Delegates, beginning a multiple-cycles-long effort to retake that chamber ahead of the 2020 redistricting process. A sane Virginia House map would net Democrats at least a couple of U.S. House seats, if not more. That's worth fighting for as we fight for a long-term progressive governing majority.

So far, things are looking good for next month's elections.

[The political climate is] energizing Democrats and alarming Republicans. It could augur what neither party had anticipated in early October: That badly outnumbered House Democrats could make significant gains, because of their party’s stronger-than-expected statewide ticket and backlash to the shutdown.

Recent internal polling by both parties suggests as much. Operatives in both parties disagree on how many House seats actually may be in play: Democrats believe there could be 10. Republicans put the number at six, maybe, eight, if conditions continue to erode.

The Republican gerrymander will ensure that the GOP maintains control of the House ... for now. But 18 GOP-held House districts were won by President Barack Obama in 2012. Poor off-year Democratic base voter performance has given Republicans those seats. Any significant gains will auger well for 2014. It will mean our base is energized at greater levels than is usually the case in non-presidential years.

The right-leaning Loudoun Times-Mirror newspaper, representing one of the state's key swing counties, has endorsed virtually the entire Democratic ticket. The paper has stuck with a handful of incumbents, but for a newspaper that endorsed Mitt Romney, John McCain, and Bob McDonnell, their endorsements of a mostly Democratic slate is astounding.

Virginia Dems are about to buck history—that the party in the White House loses the governor's race, and they're poised to cut deeply into Democratic advantages. Our job is to back them up. So chip in a few bucks to one or all of them, each dollar a tiny anvil thrown at a drowning Republican. They couldn't be more deserving.
