Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Please begin with an informative title:

For the past 3 years I have written that you have to be careful about everything that ALEC writes - that they intentionally mislead the press and the public.

For years, the ALEC group here are DK has tried to warn readers that ALEC was out to destroy our democratic representative government - of, for and by the people.

The message of warning, has become much more critical and foreboding with the drop of the ALEC 2012 - 990 last night.

You must enter an Intro for your Diary Entry between 300 and 1150 characters long (that's approximately 50-175 words without any html or formatting markup).

For 40 years ALEC has preached an unending litany of "Limited Government"
Until last night I thought I had a pretty good handle on what the ALEC mantra of "Limited Government" meant.

"Limited Government"
I thought I knew what ALEC meant by that
destruction of government - as we know it - by
             the destruction of regulatory agencies
stealing tax dollars to give to corporations
             destruction of public employee unions
             amending the constitution
- I should have been smarter
- I should have known the meaning was much bigger than that!

"Limited Government"
ALEC has been using that phrase for 40 years - evidently in a duplicitous manner.
And last night they proved it.

Last night ALEC dropped their 990 on the web and the TRUE EVILNESS of ALEC was again exposed.

For years the ALEC group here on DK has tried to warned people that the American Legislative Exchange Council was out to destroy our democratic representative government - of, for and by the people.

Last night - ALEC proved it in their 990:
From the 990:

In accordance with the bylaws of ALEC, full membership shall be open to persons dedicated to the preservation of individual liberty, basic American values and institutional productive free enterprise, and limited representative government, who support the purposes of ALEC, and who serve, or formerly served, as members of a state or territorial legislature, the United States Congress or similar bodies outside the United States.

From the ALEC 2012 990 - I did not make this up!

Historically ALEC membership has been open to those persons dedicated to

individual liberty, free enterprise, and limited government,
NOW - with the distribution of the ALEC 2012, 990 ALEC membership is
open to persons dedicated to the preservation of individual liberty, basic American values and institutional productive free enterprise, and limited representative government,
If you think this means anything close to what we have now folks - be prepared!
ALEC has intentionally changed their focus from "Limited Government" to "Limited Representative Government".

Last year ALEC distributed a report  to their members on a Constitutional Convention - written about extensively here on DK by FeltzNook.

Earlier this year, you have this action taken by ALEC member Brockaway - :

according to Georgia state Rep. Buzz Brockaway, the biggest problem with the Senate is that it's democratically elected. Brockaway, a Republican, has introduced a bill in the state legislature to repeal the 17th Amendment,

Repeal of the 17th Amendment - taking away your right to vote for your US Senators - coming to your state soon, via an ALEC legislator.

This is much bigger than a con-con - or the 17th amendment.
These people - ALEC legislators - are the people who pushed Voter ID bills across the US.

We are no longer looking at ALEC manipulated
"Limited Government"

We are now looking at ALEC legislator manipulated
"Limited Representative Government"

We have been warned - by ALEC.
The question is - Will we sit up, pay attention and then act?

ALEC is a private 501c3 organization with over 2,000 members.
Over 2,000 members - in your state and federal government.

ALEC's members who are dedicated to "limited representative government".

And if the American people don't think that an ALEC manipulated
"Limited Representative Government"
is worth fighting against - - - then
I guess - - - -
- ALEC deserves to win.

On Tuesday - #VoteNo2ALEC!
It is with the help of the village that all things can become clearer.  Afisher in one of the comments below noted:  “ALEC has the same terminology on the 990 forms for 2011 and 2010.    So maybe not a change.”  That comment is important – because we can now confirm that this was not a fluke or a slip up or a typo on ALECs part. They have been using this phrase “limited representative government” intentionally over time.

AND the phrase is limited, currently, to their 990’s - but used repetitively every year.  A search of the web found only two other ALEC documents, available to the public - their 1989 legislative sourcebook and the 1991 annual meeting brochure -  that included this phrase.

The phrase “limited representative government” can not be found on the ALEC webpage or any of their other current digital documents searchable on the web.
