Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.
For the complete list of DailyKos diary guidelines, please click here.

Please begin with an informative title:

Every day is a new day and with that, a new opportunity.
EVERYONE is welcome and please join us each morning at 7:30 AM PACIFIC
to tell us what you're working on, share your show & tell, vent, whatever you want...
...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
Diarist's Note: I hope you all enjoyed your extra hour of sleep, except for arizonablue, of course. The time change in Indiana used to be a puzzle but the Hoosier State now changes to and from Daylight Savings like the rest of the country (except the non-Navajo Nation part of Arizona). Anyway, I just thought I'd mention the switch back to Standard Time.

Do you like puzzles?

My nephew (left) and Palmer Mebane, who finished second
in the world, during the team competition.
You may not know that a couple of weeks ago, a United States team won the 22nd World Puzzle Championship (WPC), held in Beijing. It was the fourteenth title for the U.S. I likely would not know this either except that my nephew was on the team and finished seventh in the world individually. He is named for my father so it is really cool to see his name there.

The 8th World Sudoku Championships (WSC) immediately preceded the WPC, but the US didn't do as well, finishing ninth. My nephew was the highest finishing American at twenty-seventh. This is not the first time he has been part of the WPC and WSC and it is not his first time as part of the puzzle championship team, but this diary is about puzzles so I will spare you any further rhapsodizing about what an amazing person he is. Suffice it to say that William has always been brilliant.

My nephew rushes to submit
his completed puzzles.
It's fairly complex to explain the rules, but here is a link to an excellent article with pictures that does a pretty good job of both the WSC and the WPC.

I wondered what kind of puzzles were used at the WPC. There are all kinds. Thomas Snyder, who is on the US team and finished third in the world, has a blog and mentioned some of the puzzles. Let's take what he calls a "Bosnian Snake," for example. It is also called a Bosnian Road. The rules are simple:

Draw a loop in the grid by travelling horizontally and vertically without touching itself. The numbers in the grid indicate the number of cells occupied by the loop in the 8 neighbouring cells.
Here's a picture of an example:

I don't know about you folks, but I couldn't even begin to solve that simple puzzle. You should see the medium difficulty puzzle. I can't imagine how hard they must be at the WPC.

Snyder also mentioned a "Word/Nurikabe variation" so I looked that one up. It's apparently a combination of a number puzzle (Nurikabe) which features "islands" and "streams," but substitutes words for numbers. It's too hard for me!

Next was a "Pentomino variation," a Tetris-like game involving shapes. Apparently, you must place shapes in different-sized squares to make them fit precisely. I have no idea what the "variation" might be that Snyder mentions, but I'll bet it's hard. I've never been great at Tetris so I imagine I would be lost trying one of these.

There was also a "large and oddly shaped Slalom puzzle," according to Snyder. A slalom puzzle involves going through "gates" without crossing your path. It looks like this:

Of course, this is the simple version. A "large and oddly shaped" one would be far beyond my capabilities.

I do like puzzles sometimes. I have gone through stages where I did a lot of Sudoku and a lot of crosswords. I like to do the Jumble in the newspaper and sometimes solve the Cryptograms. But I am not in the league that these folks are in. They are operating on mathematical planes I cannot even imagine.

So how about you?
