Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Please begin with an informative title:

Exactly fifty years after the "Freedom Summer"—during which three civil rights workers were murdered by KKK members while registering black voters in Mississippithousands of African Americans escaped from the shackles of the Democrat [sic] party and helped Thad Cochran defeat Chris McDaniel.

It was quite a coup for Republicans.

Having exhausted the supply of angry white guys during the 2012 elections, in the ensuing years, the GOP and their 501(c)(4) allies devoted a great deal of resources towards reaching out to minorities—and it seemed that their efforts were finally bearing fruit.

You'd think that teabaggers—who've long sought to dispel the notion that they're racist—would've welcomed this development.

But you'd be wrongdead wrong; instead, they raged against the dying of the white.

Apparently, some things never change.

On Comedy Central...

Jon Stewart weighed in on the latest developments in Iraq, and the reemergence of Dick Cheney.

And Stephen Colbert kicked around the idea that the World Cup is all a giant conspiracy to distract us from President Obama's scandalous hatred of America.

Note: The Daily Show  and The Colbert Report will be airing reruns this week.

Elsewhere...

The NRA argued that gay domestic abusers should have the same right to own guns as straight domestic abusers. Or something.

The legislation, introduced by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), would tighten existing federal restrictions against gun ownership for individuals convicted of domestic violence and stalking. Federal law prohibits individuals with misdemeanor domestic violence convictions from owning guns, but includes loopholes that allow convicted stalkers and "individuals in a current or former dating relationship who never lived together or had a child together" to purchase weapons. [...]

But in an e-mail sent to Congress on Tuesday, the gun lobby complains that the legislation goes too far by "including expansive and vaguely defined 'dating relationships' and individuals 'similarly situated to a spouse.'" It goes on to single out partnered gay men:

Under S. 1290, for example, two men of equal size, strength, and economic status joined by a civil union or merely engaged (or formerly engaged) in an intimate "social relationship," could be subject to this prohibition for conviction of simple "assault" arising from a single shoving match.

Meanwhile...

North Carolina's state House Speaker Pro Tempore shared some outdated thoughts on the connection between homosexuality, pedophilia and bestiality.

During the discussion, state House Speaker Pro Tempore Paul "Skip" Stam passed around a handout featuring information from the American Psychiatric Association that listed pedophilia and bestiality as "sexual orientations," according to Raleigh TV station WRAL. The chamber was debating a proposed amendment to a bill on charter school modifications that would bar discrimination based on "sexual orientation or gender identity" in both hiring and admissions.

"Sexual orientation is not defined anywhere. I have here 30 different types of sexual orientation," Stam said, as quoted by WRAL. "I thought we should exclude pedophilia, masochism, and sadism, which are sexual orientations."

Stam did not mention that the information in his handout, which dated back to 2000, had been updated in the APA manual to classify those attractions as "disorders" rather than "orientations," according to the news station.

And, speaking of psychiatric disorders...

Dr. Ben Carson provided a case study on the need for straight jackets.

In his speech to homophobic hate-group the National Organization for Marriage, Dr Ben Carson went full conspiracy-theorist nutcase as he explained how the liberal plot to allow gays to get married was really part of a Marxist push for a "New World Order".  [...]

Carson mentions the writer Cleon Skousen, a right-wing conspiracy theorist who wrote about how communists are planning to subvert the US government back in the 1950s. Completely on board Skousen's 50-year-old crazy train, Carson actually brings up Neo-Marxists and their dream of a "New World Order", claiming that the liberal push for equality is in fact an attempt to destroy American families and take over the government.

Taste the rainbow.
