A headline from April 13 2011:
Record number of Americans get government help
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- One in six Americans is receiving help from the government, just as fiscal austerity threatens to reduce some of that aid. Soaring unemployment during The Great Recession has driven tens of millions of people to the dole. Enrollment in Medicaid and food stamp programs are at record highs, while unemployment insurance rolls remain at elevated levels.
But don't worry, I can just hear Mr Friedman tapping away... it will get better in another six months.
The only thing I cannot decide is which thing I am waiting another six months for.
Is it some sign that the immiseration of millions of our fellow Americans has reversed? Is that what is going to take one more Friedman unit to appear?
Or, is it some sign that the crazy that grips our so-called Republic has reached it's zenith? I mean the crazy where tens of millions are suffering -- needing more and more aid -- while asshat multi-millionaires (funded by asshat billionaires) in capitol buildings everywhere talk daily about cutting that very aid? Is that what another Friedman unit will bring us?
Problem is it's been over sixty Friedman units since Ronald Reagan took office, and so far the crazy has barely hit any speed bumps. Maybe the next Friedman unit will instead just bring us another war with Yemen or some such place most of us never think about.
