Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Please begin with an informative title:

A little over a week ago, I described my experience of seeing the devastation of the class war firsthand.  It's one thing to blog about policy debates and economic statistics and the misguided priorities of our plutocratically controlled political class.  It's another thing altogether to see the foreclosed homes, the abandoned apartments, the laid off workers and the people secluded in mansions who justify it all as "belt-tightening."  Whose belt is being tightened, I wonder?

I mentioned that I had started my training to be a field organizer with Working America, a community affiliate of the AFL-CIO that is out there on the ground every day engaging and educating voters, collecting messages from the community back to politicians, and generally doing what it can to hold the line and give working people hope  This week I am happy to say that I passed my training and will become an official staff member later this week!

Intro

You must enter an Intro for your Diary Entry between 300 and 1150 characters long (that's approximately 50-175 words without any html or formatting markup).

I wish that I had time to write a more lengthy entry as I did previously describing the interesting people I've met and the view from the ground.  I'm sure that I will in the coming weeks.  But it's been a very busy and stressful (if also exciting!) couple of weeks.  I moved for the second time in less than a year, so now I don't have an hour long commute each way every day.  Expect an upcoming blog entry about the pains of moving, even when you have supportive family members to help you.  One of my pet peeves in the fight for economic justice is the argument that we don't need to help devastated areas, but that people just need to "move to where the jobs are."  If you're in a place where the jobs ain't, good luck saving up enough money to move to where they are!

I also should probably post a general disclaimer that unless otherwise specified, nothing I say should be taken as representing the views of Working America, the AFL-CIO or any other...yada yada yada.  You're smart people and can figure that out, right?

So yeah, this was basically a "facebook update" of a diary letting you know I landed my new job, I have a new apartment in a new city, I'm exhausted from all the changes but thrilled to get back on the front lines today armed with a pen and a new high-tech clipboard with waterproof storage compartment that I bought over the weekend.

And it's a good thing, too, as it's pouring down rain today.  Thunderstorms later.  Probably sent in by the Koch brothers secret team of mad weather scientists to keep people inside where they can only hear the 30-second messages from their TV screens.

But the people united will never be defeated!  By the way, if you're an unemployed or under-employed Kossack, or even if you are an employed Kossack who hates your job and wants to make a difference, I'm pretty sure several Working America offices are hiring.  I'm almost certain that the Pittsburgh office still is.  So give your local office a call and get paid to fight the man instead of getting paid to make the man richer than he already is.

Alright, now I'm really off.  Wish me luck!
