...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
Tomorrow, many of the members of this community will be engaged, in one way or another, in celebrating what's come to be known as "Thanksgiving." I've written at some length, in comments and elsewhere, about the myriad reasons why we don't celebrate "Thanksgiving Day," per se. Chief among them, no pun intended, is the fact that it so thoroughly whitewashes our own history. We do, as I've also said before, use the day as another reminder to be thankful for the many blessings we do enjoy. We also "celebrate," for lack of a better word, Native American Heritage Day on Friday as rite of grief, affirmation of survival, and song of hope for our peoples.

But that's not what I want to talk about today.

Today, I want to talk about HOW we give thanks.

Thankfulness [like gratitude, which is not precisely synonymous], is, I think, a universal impulse. Regardless of religion, spiritual tradition or lack thereof, or culture, it seems to me that most people feel the need occasionally, to offer up a heartfelt "Thank you!" - whether to another person, a deity, a sense of some cosmic force, or nothing in particular. In some traditions, it involves cultivating a habit of being thankful, a form of mindfulness. In others, it tends to be more practical, triggered by something specific. For myself, it's both.

PhotobucketWhenever we're blessed in some particular way - for example, every time we make a sale (even a $2 card), I offer up a little cedar and/or sage to Spirit.  Yes, in my case, it's about offering thanks to our particular conception of Spirit (others might call it God, or the Creator, or something else). But it's also about cultivating that attitude of mindfulness. It not only gives thanks; it reminds me to be aware of how blessed I am, when too often, it's easy to feel that I'm not.

PhotobucketThere are other ways, too. We have our various prayer traditions. Some are formal and highly ceremonial; others are as simple as an under-the-breath invocation in time of stress. At various times in the past, we've had a tipi or sometimes a small hand-built lodge that we use for such purposes.

Sometimes, it's active. It exists in helping someone who needs a hand, like the Propane Project, or Okiciyap. Paying it forward a little bit. Remembering that we have heat and food, and not everyone does - and then doing something to fix that.

Photobucket And sometimes, it's as simple as sitting at the edge of the pond under the weeping willows, or gazing at the mountains as they shift and change under the clouds, or finding an eagle feather or an ancient pottery sherd, or seeing the horses and dogs running joyously across the fields - and stopping, just for a moment, to say:

Chi miigwech.

How do you give thanks?
