"Did you hear the one about....?"

"A friend of a friend told me....."

I saw a lot of crazy things when I was 18 and training to be an X-Ray tech in a huge County Hospital.  Really crazy things. I quickly learned that humans are endlessly inventive when it comes to hurting themselves and getting in trouble.

So when an E.R. nurse told me the poodle in the microwave story I believed it.

If you haven't heard this urban legend, it involves a little old lady who is rushed to the emergency room with a heart attack.  Standard enough story until you get to the cause of her coronary. This LOL (little old lady)  shampoos her pooch in the kitchen sink on a cold wintry day and then, worried he'll catch cold, pops him in the microwave to dry him off.  The gory explosion that ensues sends the LOL to the E.R. Thankfully she made it, my friend told me, but she never went back to her apartment. No, it hadn't happened on his shift, but an EMT friend of his responded to the call and saw the whole mess.

After I finished my training I got a night and weekend job at the classier Catholic hospital in town.  Late one night the lab tech told me the same exploding poodle story as we scarfed down donuts in the E.R. break room. She knew for a fact it had happened at our hospital, because her supervisor knew the night clerk who admitted the woman with the heart attack.  The LOL of this story was a wealthy donor and rather than publicly embarrass her the cause of her heart attack was never publicly reported.

Then I heard the same story a few years later, hundreds of miles away at my third hospital job.  It was the same basic story with a different set of embellished details but the same basic bona fides. This was the pre-internet version of a meme going viral. Social Contagion! When I ran across the book The Vanishing Hitchhiker by Jan Harold Brunvand, a university professor, American folklorist and studier of the phenomenon of the urban legend, it all made sense.

The Poodle in the Microwave (and it was always a poodle) encapsulated all the elements of the perfect urban legend.  It featured a plausible story by a credible FOAF (friend of a friend).  It revealed some deep-seated fear; in this case, the witless misuse of a new and not fully understood technology. It was horrifying, yet darkly funny.  People repeat this kind of story, especially when they trust their source, who after all got it from the original source.

What urban legends or tall tales have you fallen for? Have you ever passed one on?  How about you make one up right now and see if it goes viral?

What urban legend have you fallen for?

What urban legend have you gotten away with telling?

What urban legend might you just make up right now? Prove it!
