• The NRA has won the battle over post-Newtown gun safety legislation: After yesterday's defeat of the Manchin-Toomey background check compromise, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will pull the entire gun safety bill from the floor because it can't get past a filibuster. Apparently, Republicans were lying when they agreed with President Obama during his State of the Union speech that victims of gun violence deserve a vote.
  • The question now is whether the NRA's tactical victory will prove to be a strategic defeat as they boxed themselves into an extreme position opposed by 90 percent of Americans. In his remarks yesterday, President Obama was visibly angry, and called out the NRA for telling lies. I suspect this won't be the last we hear of this issue from him.
  • In a occurrence that has become all too familiar, President Obama heads to Boston this morning for a memorial service honoring the victim's of Monday's attack on the Boston Marathon. The event will take place at 11 AM ET at Boston Cathedral. Assuming that the White House streams it live, you can watch it here.
  • According to The Boston Globe, authorities plan to release images today of two separate suspects who were videotaped dropping bags believed to contain the explosive devices used in the attack. Given how much bad reporting there was yesterday, I'll believe it when I see it, but lets hope that progress is being made. NBC's Pete Williams, who didn't fall into the trap of reporting arrests that never took place, was a bit more circumspect than The Globe, but said he believes the pictures could be released today if authorities can't identify the men on their own.
  • The explosion of a fertilizer plant in Texas killed at least 5 and perhaps closer to 15. It also wounded more than 150. It was a truly horrific accident.
