I have encountered a lot of white racists in the last few days who are complaining that the media is portraying white people as racist. Especially over the last week in regards to the Martin/Zimmerman case.
Now, to be clear, these racists are not complaining about certain white people being portrayed as racist. No, they are complaining that ALL white people are being portrayed as racist. But they ARE actually talking about instances in the media in which only certain white people are being portrayed as racist.
The first thing I thought about this, was how stupid these people are. I thought that they had problems with comprehension. That maybe they couldn't differentiate between "some" and "all" in a discussion.
But then I realized that it's not a lack of comprehension that is behind the way they hear "some" white people being portrayed as racist and take it to mean that "all" white people are racist. They are simply racist towards white people. Towards themselves. They hear that some white people are a certain way and take it to mean that all white people are that way.
Now, I've always known that racists tend to believe that their own race is "better" than other races. But I didn't really connect that to the fact that it is racism itself that causes that belief. I just thought racism was something that supports that belief (delusion).
I'm just starting to think about this. What are your thoughts about it?
