What's your favorite day of the week song?
The days of the week seem to have their own unique personalities. Monday, of course, is the annoying, nagging aunt because it marks the beginning of the work week. It has lots of negative connotations to it and it is probably the least popular day. Sunday, on the other hand, is a quiet gent, "a day of rest," with church and family dinners and lazy afternoons.
Wednesday, universally known as Hump Day, is eager and tries too hard. It's the point in the work week where you have reached the mountaintop and seen the promised land of the weekend. So Wednesday is a hopeful day, albeit the most often misspelled one.
Saturday is the wild one. Anything can happen on Saturday. Homeowners mow lawns, hobbyists build models, and kids watch cartoons. Dances are danced and drinks are drunk and dares are dared. Saturday is the most diverse day; people tend to pursue their personal interests on Saturday.
The wallflowers, Tuesday and Thursday, are the most nondescript days. They annoyingly require us to add a second letter to their abbreviations: MTuWThF. Tuesday has little to recommend it except that it is Not Monday. Thursday, the day of my birth, is sort of Zombie Day. After the Hump Day high of seeing the weekend ahead, Thursday is just filler till you get to Friday.
Friday is the most popular one. TGIF. Everyone wants to be around Friday. It's the most celebrated day of the week because it is the most anticipated. It marks the end of the work week and the beginning of a couple of days of freedom. I always associate this song with Friday because an Atlanta radio station used to play it every Friday during afternoon drive time. Friday night is the time you can let off steam and get a good buzz on. It's the day when you stole your first kiss at the sock hop after the game. It's forgetting about cooking and eating out instead. Friday rewards you. Friday is payday.
So naturally, with their diverse associations, the days are frequently the subject of songs. From Elton John and Bernie Taupin's Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting to Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson singing Sunday Morning Coming Down, great songs about days are abundant. Whether it's Monday, Monday by the Mamas and the Papas or Simon and Garfunkel's Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., everyone has a day song to love. So I thought we'd see what you Newdies™ like. I'll post my favorite here and another classic in the Tip Jar.
Why does Cat Stevens always have a song I love?
