Thursday saw A&E's popular reality series Duck Dynasty return for a fifth season. It was the first new show since A&E suspended, then unsuspended the Louisiana family's patriarch for making graphic homophobic remarks in an interview with GQ magazine.
Although the show still commands a large audience, the 8.5 million viewers who tuned in represented a massive 28% drop from the 11.8 million who tuned in to see the season premiere of season 4.
Phil Robertson ignited a raging controversy last month when he voiced his homophobia in graphic sexual terms:
"What? I don't understand it. A vagina is more desirable than a man's anus. Why would a guy want to not use a vagina?"
You can hear a reenactment of the comments by amateur voice actor and fellow homophobe Rush Limbaugh below:
Limbaugh and other right wing figureheads such as Sarah Palin and Louisiana's own Bobby Jindal defended the controversial remarks as a Constitutional expression of free speech--Limbaugh even going so far as to suggest that Robertson was simply a "devout Christian" trying to "spread [his] religious views."
Sounds like somebody needs to take a closer look at Exodus 20.
*Note: This diary first mentioned Duck Dynasty's latest ratings yesterday.
