It is still too soon for the spring generation to fly back north, for now, the butterflies will remain in Mexico and the warmer parts of California. If the butterfly lives in the Eastern part of the country they will migrate to Mexico and hibernate in oyamel fir trees. If they live west of the Rocky Mountains, they will migrate to Pacific Grove, California and hibernate in the eucalyptus trees. Every year, the fourth generation of butterflies migrate to the same trees of their predecessors to take part in a yearly ritual of hibernation. But sadly, people are cutting down enough of the butterfly's favorite trees that conservationists are concerned for their survival.

Never An Act of Destruction: Migration, Journeys or Butterflies?

"A butterfly is a mainly day-flying insect of the order

Lepidoptera, which includes the butterflies and moths.

Like other holometabolous insects, the butterfly's life cycle

consists of four parts: egg, larva, pupa and adult."

Day after gray day dawns as the

Mystery of the polar vortex chokes this

Nation of dire consequences.

People with dead hearts sit in the

Ornate building on the hill, built of

Marble, cast iron, sandstone.

Surrounded by things that last. Enduring.

Hearts dead, they luxuriate in comfort.

What journey brought them to the

Empty place where they make laws that

Deprive beautiful little children of food?

What money, power, luxury enticed them to

Migrate a hateful path that empowers them to

Take away help that people so deeply need?

Would that they were like the butterflies.

Swooping and swarming in beauty, sharing

With those of their species, cycling through

Life spreading wonder, joy and mystery.

Ephemeral, never enduring, flight in air then

Lighting on a branch to display their color with

Never an act of destruction.

Would that those who drive our nation were

More like the butterflies.

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
