A sign, flag and flowers are seen outside a home honoring victims who died in the December 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut December 19, 2012. Six more victims of the Newtown school shooting will be honored at funerals
Because we refuse to stop it, that's why.
I can't say this is really surprising.
In a news report published Thursday, CNN amends its prior reporting that there were 74 school shootings since the Newtown Massacre — a number calculated by gun violence prevention group Everytown for Gun Safety — and concludes that there have instead been just 15. [...]

CNN’s coverage does not mention it, but its change of heart followed a series of criticisms from right-wing commentators and outlets. Those 74 school shootings amounted to almost one shooting per week over the past year and a half, a rate that left some gun activists concerned about gun regulations. As Media Matters tells it, the criticism started with tweets from Charles C. Johnson, a self-described journalist who called several of the shootings listed as “fake,” including one in which an honors student shot himself in front of his class.

The way CNN gets the new number is by saying a gun being fired inside a school does not count as a "school shooting" where gangs were involved, presumably because black people or something, or when drugs were involved, no given reason, or where criminals ran into a school during a police chase and shot someone, or classroom suicides, or disputes between adults that left someone dead. Their new criteria counts only situations that are "Newtown-like", quote, apparently meaning it only counts as a "school shooting" if a student or someone went to the school with the explicit intent of killing specific students, or students generally, and didn't have a fine, decent American reason for it like a domestic dispute or a drug deal gone bad or was a criminal who was only shooting people in the school on his way to shoot people somewhere else. No, I don't get it either, but they could only find fifteen of those, since the one in Newtown, and doesn't it sound a lot better if you say that four out of five schoolyard gunfights don't count? I feel safer already. Soon they're not going to count plane crashes as crashes unless the plane hit salt water.

All right, so there we go. CNN has declared that it's not a "school shooting" unless it's a preplanned murder(?), or only certain suicides, or only certain gunmen wandering onto campus—I'm not kidding, the criteria seems all over the map—and are doing it after a vocal gun-fetishist barrage of demands that nobody pay attention to all the other times a gunman shoots someone at school because shut up, that's why. You may make of that what you will. Personally I don't give a rat's ass because CNN these last few years has devolved into a now completely unwatchable tabloid-with-holograms format, but I suppose we have to pretend there's still some dignity there to lose.
